Abstract

Nanofluidics is the study of fluids, when confined into nanometric structures (< 10−9 m). Liquids and gases confined at this scale show special behavior not observed in larger structures, and it’s beyond the description power of classical continuum mechanics. For the investigation of such systems both theoretical and experimental approaches are necessary.

To study the fluid transport and rheology of liquids in porous media, in particular in nanoporous solids, we combine continuum mechanics and fluid dynamics on the macroscopic porous-solid scale, supported by molecular dynamics simulations on the single-nanopore scale. Our experiments demonstrate that it is possible to monitor liquid and gas flow through nanoporous solids via simple dilatometry measurements, offering multiple potential applications.
